the distinction between “crafts” and “fine art” is probably driven by misogyny and the devaluation of women’s labor
Alright, I'm 20, Pansexual Non-Binary. They/them please. I draw stuff and RP. Request stuff if you feel like it, I mostly do undertale but eh, whatever.
the distinction between “crafts” and “fine art” is probably driven by misogyny and the devaluation of women’s labor
art forms that have traditionally been practiced by women like embroidery are devalued and called just “crafts” while art forms that women historically were mostly barred from (painting, sculpture) are “fine art”
Also racism; African and Indigenous art is considered crafts whereas only white forms are “art”
this was the subject of an entire term’s architectural project for our master’s degree program, we had long, involved class discussions about this, and you are absolutely, exceptionally correct.

Dog tags of the more than 58,000 service men and women who died in the Vietnam War hang from the ceiling of the National Vietnam Veterans Art Museum in Chicago. The 10-by-40-foot sculpture, entitled Above and Beyond, was designed by Ned Broderick and Richard Stein.

Marco Evaristti, Chilean artist, made the Icelandic geyser Strokkur eruption appear pink with red food coloring.
im picturing him dumping an entire bottle of red food colouring into a geyser and then running

saw in the tags someone was looking for the ‘It’s Art’ Gif hope this is what they meant! I just typed into the gif search ‘Iron giant’ that’s how easily I found it
You can really tell when a cartoon is created by comedy people who don’t really care about cartoons.
I was actually talking about the art styles, and not the overall quality of the shows.
It’s not that these shows’ art styles are ugly, it’s that they’re bland. It feels like during the initial design phase the artists just did a cookie-cutter job because the creators were too busy with the writing to give them much direction. It could still be saved by good writing, storyboarding and animation (and this might be the case with Big Mouth, from what I heard) but it still looks underwhelming on a fundamental level, when it could have been better.
Also, there’s this sentiment going around recently that adult cartoons in general have bad art styles. While it’s true that having a niche audience makes it harder for more ambitious adult cartoons to flourish these days, I feel like some of these sentiments are misdirected towards shows that don’t deserve it. Sure, adult cartoons, especially sitcoms, usually have a more grounded approach, but that doesn’t mean they’re less inspired.
Like, when Mike Judge created King of the Hill, he had a very specific vision on what he wanted his cartoon to look like, right down to the characters’ body language. He wanted it to feel like a live-action show that just happens to be animated.

Or like when Raphael Bob-Waksberg made Bojack Horseman, he insisted that Lisa Hanawalt be the production designer because he wanted the show to look like her art. She even had her own consistent rules about how they would anthropomorphize the animal characters.

Or how Bob’s Burgers made their characters look endearing without making them conventionally cute or attractive, keeping in line with the show’s themes of loving yourself, imperfections and all.

Or how the Smith family in Rick and Morty intentionally looks normal so that the aliens around them look even weirder, while also allowing them to subvert standard sitcom family archetypes.

(also RnM has tons of fucking gorgeous art, let’s be honest)
Even if they don’t look like Disney, you can still tell when the creators care a lot about how their shows look. They chose the style that fits the tone they were going for. Don’t mistake grounded for bland.
…did you just say Rick and Morty has a good artstyle
What the fuck
Are you actually calling the art of the show different from other unfunny ugly ass adult cartoons
i mean… yea?
they have beautiful backgrounds like these for shots that only last for a few seconds:

and they go wild when it comes to character design, especially the aliens

and also they have scenes like these, which i guess is more of a praise towards the storyboarding and animation, but it’s still nice to watch:
regardless of how you feel about the show, you gotta admit, they have some really nice art
Thank you, poster above me. I always like to read constructive criticism, even if shows I enjoy, but people need to stop LOOKING for reasons to slag off Rick & Morty.
Yes, there are fans who are the worst kind of neckbeard-stroking pseudo-intellectual trash, who take away none of the shows messages but instead turn improvised one-liners into memes. But while people acting like they’re superior for liking the show is annoying, acting like you’re superior for not liking the show is just as annoying.
You can’t complain about people mechanically spewing Rick And Morty memes when - if my contribution somehow gets popular - someone on tumblr is going to put that MS Paint drawing of sad Rick with the speech bubble thing above it under what I’m saying. And then pat themselves on the back for a job well done, because they are obviously not a trash person who likes that trash show.
I have nothing against people who don’t like the show. I understand their reasons for not liking, or not watching. I understand that a lot of the fans are garbage. But that’s not the show’s fault, that’s not the show’s intent, and all the forced negativity on my dash is pissing me the fuck off.
Stop it.

you can get it here , or just reblogging this would help
i still can’t believe that the incredibles is likely set in the 1960s
the entire film is designed with classic 50s-60s art styles, a lot of the interior design of the parr household is in 60s style, fashion is generally reminiscent of the 60s, in the beginning of the film all the photographs and video are grainy and shot in 60s style, the technology in bob’s office is very dated, when edna is going on her “no capes” rant she cites superheroes who died from cape designs and says their deaths were in the 50s, all the cars in the film have 60s models, any advanced tech we really see is seemingly kept secret from the general public, here’s a newspaper from the film:

may 16th, 1962
some people are saying that the technology on bob’s desk was too advanced for the 1960s but not really, in the 60s computers DID exist they were just big and bulky and small screened, which matches bob’s:

you could argue that some of the fashion isn’t very realistic to the 60s as some of the women wear pants, but women did wear pants in the 60s even if it wasn’t common. as for the mens fashion, it’s kinda spot on. the business suits with short sleeved button ups and skinny black ties, the turtlenecks, and for more dressed down looks wearing a t-shirt and jeans isn’t very unrealistic (and that little boy on the red tricycle, wearing a baseball cap, and chewing bubble gum is like classic 60s imagery)
some outfits were likely oversights and/or them not wanting the time period to be too glaring. the sequel looks like they’re going to be making the womens wardrobe fit the stereotypical 60s timeframe better, as you can see in the trailer:

the writer and director of the incredibles has even said that he based the film on classic 60s superheroes and comics like god guys please use google search, why would i lie about this
Also in the original version of Syndrome meeting the kids he didn’t say the “Busy” line he says “I didn’t think they let you guys breed?!” Which, aside from being incredibly dark all on its own, suggests that America took fascist measures to control the populace of superhumans, making Bob’s struggle to keep the family hidden and everyone’s elation at Jack Jack not having powers utterly depressing ALSO the age of Violet puts the prologue scene somewhere in the 40s which forces the viewer to consider two possibilities, one that World War 2 never happened because of the existence of superheroes in America as a deterrent or two that superheroes were created by America as a weapon for use in the second world war
Post some fusions before I get too busy away from art again.
Should I give them names?
* I make the designs with some Steven Universe fusion concepts, but they are not gems here
* I am not gonna design more fusions right now
